Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an emerging public health problem in Canada and throughout the world. Defined as either kidney damage, an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 , or albuminuria > 3 mg/mmol, CKD can be classified into 6 GFR categories and 3 albuminuria categories as follows: stages according to the K/DOQI CKD classification scheme.

In predicting the prognosis of CKD it is important to consider the eGFR category and the albuminuria category to categorize patients into risk categories.
